Abstract
In an environment immersed in deep transformations resulting from European counter- reformist attitudes, the Spanish Absolute Monarchy implanted the baroque canons in the colonial cities founded on the American continent between 1492 and 1810. The changes in the urban morphology of Havana¿s port city resulted in the construction of civil architecture in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, where the spirit of the ¿Moorish¿ merged with baroque elements, and the regional features will prevail over any artistic manifestation. Raised on a grid plan, they will witness continuous threats from European pirate raids, resulting in the erection of imposing fortified stone architectures, today worthy of being on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
