Abstract
The existing documentation on the Jesuit Ignacio Garcia (1692-1754), who dies with ¿fame of holiness¿ in Santiago, Chile, reveals not only the main aspects of his life and mission, but it gives a detailed account of his heroic practice of the virtues, which may be interpreted as an intention to elevate the Jesuit to the altars. The going over of the eventful life of Ignacio García; the analysis of the testimonies of those who knew him and even of those who would have been benefited by miracles because of his mediation; and the study of the written work of the Jesuit, allow to assess his figure as candidate for sainthood during the 18th century in Chile. Likewise, these documents -key to addressing the ¿fame of holiness¿ in this particular case and his historical significance in terms of religious model-, show the value of hagiography as a historical source.
