AB La documentación existente sobre el jesuita Ignacio García (1692-1754), quien muere con ¿fama de santidad¿ en Santiago de Chile, revela no sólo los principales aspectos de su vida y misión, sino que da cuenta detalladamente de su ejercicio heroico de las virtudes, lo que puede interpretarse como una intención de llevar al jesuita a los altares. La relectura de la azarosa vida de Ignacio García; el análisis de los testimonios de quienes lo conocieron e incluso de aquellos que habrían sido beneficiados por hechos milagrosos debido a su mediación; y el estudio de la obra escrita del jesuita, permiten aquilatar su figura en cuanto candidato a la santidad durante el siglo XVIII en Chile. Asimismo, dichos documentos fundamentales para abordar la ¿fama de santidad¿ en este caso particular y su significado histórico en cuanto modelo religioso, dan cuenta del valor de la hagiografía como fuente histórica.
AB The existing documentation on the Jesuit Ignacio Garcia (1692-1754), who dies with ¿fame of holiness¿ in Santiago, Chile, reveals not only the main aspects of his life and mission, but it gives a detailed account of his heroic practice of the virtues, which may be interpreted as an intention to elevate the Jesuit to the altars. The going over of the eventful life of Ignacio García; the analysis of the testimonies of those who knew him and even of those who would have been benefited by miracles because of his mediation; and the study of the written work of the Jesuit, allow to assess his figure as candidate for sainthood during the 18th century in Chile. Likewise, these documents -key to addressing the ¿fame of holiness¿ in this particular case and his historical significance in terms of religious model-, show the value of hagiography as a historical source.
