Abstract
The Real Edifício de Mafra and its Tapada are two essential heritage elements in the history of building water use and fundamental properties both nationally and internationally. Several interventions have been identified to improve water supply, drainage and sanitation infrastructures that must be highlighted and documented throughout its history. This paper aims to explain the options taken by the monarch when deciding on the construction of the Real Building of Mafra in this place. This decision was due not only to the existence of water but also to stone and wood. The construction of the building complex and the installation of the construction site related to this great work led to the emergence of the wooden island initially and after the birth of the city of Mafra.
