Abstract
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875-1942), escultora y fundadora del Whitney Museum of American Art, dejó en sus diarios y obras una profunda emoción por el viaje. Entre sus múltiples recorridos, destacó la influencia que ejercieron sobre ella las tierras de América, perceptible no solo en visitas a Cuba y Panamá, sino también en obras inspiradas en el espíritu y los orígenes latinoamericanos. Su experiencia coincidió con el impulso panamericano de comienzos del siglo xx, lo que reforzó su sensibilidad hacia la inmigración que llegaba a Estados Unidos. Este estudio examina sus viajes reales, imaginados y artísticos, mostrando cómo el mundo cultural de las Américas marcó su producción modernista y su visión artística.

Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney (1875–1942), sculptor and founder of the Whitney Museum of American Art, conveyed in her diaries and artistic works a profound sense of the emotional significance of travel. Among her many journeys, the influence exerted on her by the lands of the Americas stands out, evident not only in her visits to Cuba and Panama but also in works inspired by Latin American origins and spirit. Her travels coincided with the early twentieth‑century Pan‑American movement, which deepened her sensitivity toward the immigration arriving in the United States. This study examines Whitney’s real, imagined, and artistic travels, revealing how the cultural world of the Americas shaped her modernist production and her artistic vision.
