Abstract
In New Spain during the 17th and 18th centuries, the cult of Saint Joseph enjoyed a late but spectacular success. The aim of this paper is to analyze the dynamics of this movement, identify its promoters and its forms of worship. By emphasizing the link between the changes in society and the history of devotions, the author proposes an interpretation of the chronological discrepancy that distinguishes the case of New Spain from that of European Catholicism.
