Regalos de indianos para la capilla de Nuestra Señora de la Antigua de la Catedral de Sevilla en los siglos XVII y XVIII

Abstract

Nuestra Señora de la Antigua, venerada en la catedral de Sevilla tras la Reconquista de la ciudad del dominio almohade en 1248, fue la gran advocación mariana de la archidiócesis hispalense durante toda la Edad Moderna. Tras el Descubrimiento y elegida Sevilla como cabeza del comercio americano, fue costumbre de los navegantes de partida hacia Indias, encomendarse a esta santa imagen antes de embarcar, confiando a su protección el buen fin del viaje. Por ello, algunos indianos le remitieron para el exorno y ajuar litúrgico de su capilla, importantes sumas de dinero o ricos objetos suntuarios.
