No hay sometimiento sin resistencias. La viudedad en la España del Siglo de Oro

Abstract

El género femenino construido en la España de los siglos modernos bebía de la religión católica para justificar la natural inferioridad de la mujer, y la necesidad de someter su existencia a la figura de padre, hermano, marido o el mismo Dios. Así, la mujer podía ser tan solo doncella, casada, viuda o monja, y su comportamiento debía adecuarse a aquel que el discurso masculino había construido para cada uno de dichos estados. En el presente trabajo se pretende desarrollar un análisis de un estado concreto, el de viuda, con el fin de comprender cómo para algunas mujeres la muerte del marido pudo suponer el nacimiento de su propio ser individual y, con ello, su participación en la sociedad, contraviniendo lo que el discurso masculino teórico aprehendido imponía como inherente a la propia viudedad. Se utilizará la obra de arte como documento histórico-visual que ejemplifica dicho fenómeno.

The female gender constructed in Spanish Golden Age was based on Catholic religion to justify the natural inferiority of women and the need to submit their existence to the figure of the father, brother, husband or even God. Thus, women could only be maids, wives, widows or nuns, and their behavior should be adapted to the model that the male discourse had constructed for each of these states. The present work intends to develop an analysis of a concrete state, widowhood, in order to understand how, for some privileged women, the death of their husbands could mean the birth of their own individual being and, with it, their participation in society, contravening what the apprehended theoretical male discourse imposed as inherent to widowhood itself. The work of art as a historical and visual document will exemplify this phenomenon.
