Abstract
The celebration of Corpus Christi required, since its institution by Pope Urban IV, the making of rich religious ornaments. In the 18th century, many of these liturgical pieces were in poor condition. The need to renew them coincided with a time of crisis in the art of embroidery, with only a few centres and needleworkers still active. In this context, some embroiderers, such as José Gualba from Zaragoza, in whose workshop numerous ornaments were made for the Corpus Corpus Christi festivities, are of great importance. These works stand out not only for their remarkable artistic and technical quality, but also for their complex Eucharistic programme.
