AB La celebración del Corpus Christi requirió, desde su institución por el papa Urbano IV, la confección de ricos ornamentos sagrados. En el siglo XVIII muchas de estas piezas litúrgicas estaban en mal estado. La necesidad de renovación de las mismas coincidió con un momento de crisis en el arte del bordado, con apenas algunos centros y artífices de la aguja todavía en activo. En este contexto cobran gran relevancia algunos bordadores como el zaragozano José Gualba, en cuyo obrador se realizaron numerosos ornamentos para la festividad del Corpus. Unas obras que sobresalen, no solo por su notable calidad artística y técnica, sino también por su complejo programa eucarístico.
AB The celebration of Corpus Christi required, since its institution by Pope Urban IV, the making of rich religious ornaments. In the 18th century, many of these liturgical pieces were in poor condition. The need to renew them coincided with a time of crisis in the art of embroidery, with only a few centres and needleworkers still active. In this context, some embroiderers, such as José Gualba from Zaragoza, in whose workshop numerous ornaments were made for the Corpus Corpus Christi festivities, are of great importance. These works stand out not only for their remarkable artistic and technical quality, but also for their complex Eucharistic programme.
