Abstract
The Morisco question raised since the rupture of the regime of capitulations established in 1492. The martyrdoms of the Alpujarras in 1568-1569 were a late result of that conflict and marked the beginning of the Morisco rebellion. Between both dates, complex evangelizing strategies are applied by the Church and, in general, a plan for the assimilation of the Moriscos by the Catholic Monarchy. To assess the scope of these martyrdoms, it is necessary to approach the study of the Alpujarra clergy, their living conditions, their possibilities and their limits, the acculturative measures applied to the Moriscos or the quantification of the martyrdoms. The apologetic sources allow us to detect certain nuances, very valuable to understand the scope of a historical process often installed in a manichaean historiography.
