Abstract
This work traces the modern history of Arabic and Islamic studies in Spain, considering two main points: the historical circumstances that led to the discipline's inclusion in academic studies, both within Spain and internationally, and, secondly, the principal topics of study throughout history and up to the present day. In this way, a chronological line can be established, beginning with the 19th-century concerns of academia, running parallel to the polemical debates inextricably linked to contemporary Spanish history and to contact with medievalists. This line also reflects an unresolved division between Arab studies and the sphere in which interpreters, diplomats, and scholars of the language's variants must necessarily operate. Furthermore, the evolution from medieval themes to the introduction of contemporary topics in university studies is noteworthy, with Arab studies having been naturally incorporated into translation studies in recent decades.
