Abstract
During the nineteenth century, the precise location of Madinat al-Zahra, the palace city founded by Abd al-Rahman III in the tenth century AD, was not fully known. Art historian Pedro de Madrazo (1816–1898), drawing upon historical sources, not only identified the archaeological remains but also promoted an excavation that, for various reasons, was ultimately never carried out. The aim of this article is to analyse the surviving documentation and texts related to the organization and development of the proposed excavation, as well as to examine the dissemination and reception of this initiative through contemporary publications and the testimony of Madrazo’s contemporaries. This research also seeks to reassess the significance of this generally overlooked episode in the history of Spanish archaeology.
