Abstract

Description

The Baroque period drew upon the secular tone and lively rhythms of the poetic-musical genre of the villancico to make use of it as a paradigm of sacred texts sung in the Romance languages throughout the Hispanic world. Both within and beyond the church setting these miniatures, in contrast to the plain chant, lengthy prayers, readings or highly rhetorical sermons, enriched religious celebrations, spreading theological lessons through the emotional link evoked by the popular form¿s text and music. The musical corpus conserved in the Historical Archive of the Bogotá Cathedral houses a considerable collection of villancicos copied between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Some examples of the stylistic traits of this collection allow us to understand the role that these pieces played in the devotional soundscape of Viceregal Bogotá at the same time that they underscore the importance of the literary and musical inheritance that these pieces bring forth.
