Abstract
La catedral de Astorga, iniciada en la última etapa del gótico, se completó durante el Barroco añadiendo tres tramos a las naves y levantando una gran fachada hacia occidente. En la nueva construcción no se quiso romper con las formas del pasado, manteniendo la unidad de estilo en el interior del templo, pero tampoco se quiso renunciar a las novedades que ofrecía el momento histórico para realizar el monumental imafronte. Con el fin de salvar esta contradicción se utilizaron recursos tomados de la tradición, convenientemente adaptados al gusto barroco, junto con otros propios de la estética de la época, manteniendo un diálogo fructífero que convenía para utilizar la persuasión a la hora de transmitir la doctrina contrarreformista que seguía vigente.
Construction of the Cathedral of Astorga began in the late Gothic period and was completed in the Baroque period with the addition of three sections to the naves and a large west front. These additions evidenced no desire to depart from the forms of the past, maintaining the unity of style inside the cathedral, but neither was there any desire to renounce the novelties offered by the times when constructing the monumental west front. In order to overcome this contradiction, use was made of traditional resources adapted to Baroque tastes, together with others typical of the aesthetics of the time, maintaining a fruitful dialogue that facilitated persuasion when transmitting the Counter- Reformation doctrine still being preached.
