El Proyecto de Educación Bilingüe Intercultural en Guna Yala, Territorio autonómico indígena en Panamá, fue producto de un largo proceso de luchas, de negociaciones, de reivindicaciones de una comunidad indígena, para tener una educación que parta de la riqueza cultural y lingüística de los pueblos originarios de la región. El actual sistema educativo (la llamada escuela oficial) no está respondiendo a las necesidades de la población escolar, en consecuencia han aumentado los fracasos y la deserción escolar en nuestras comunidades de Gunayala. El proyecto aportará un cambio sustancial en la formación integral de la niña y del niño Guna, con alta estima que valore su identidad cultural, con conocimiento científicos de la realidad local, regional, nacional e internacional. The Bilingual Intercultural Education Program, run on Guna Yala autonomous indigenous territory in Panama, is the outcome of a long process of struggle, negotiation, and the will of a native community to assert itself. The goal is to gain an education that pertains to the cultural and linguistic richness of the autochthonous inhabitants of the region. The present educational system (so-called official schooling) is cut off from what the school-age population needs, resulting in widespread failure and notable absenteeism in our Guna Yala communities. The project seeks to bring about substantial change in the educational experiences of Guna children, promoting the values of cultural identity alongside scientific awareness of local, regional, national, and international realities.
