Entre el retrato y la imagen sagrada: el caso de Eugenia de la Torre

Abstract

Este artículo tiene dos propósitos. Primero analizaré un caso inquisitorial centrado en un retrato que fue tratado como si fuera una imagen sagrada, planteando una serie de hipótesis sobre cómo entender las écfrasis de los testigos y el fiscal. En segundo lugar procuraré profundizar, en términos más generales, en la compleja relación que hubo entre la retratística y la imaginería devocional durante la Edad Moderna, sugiriendo que un retrato fácilmente podía llegar a funcionar como una imagen para la devoción, pues, entendidos como representaciones exactas, o al menos verosímiles, de personas reales, fueron empleados por el establecimiento eclesiástico para fortalecer las prácticas devocionales de los fieles. Al mismo tiempo, quizás más que cualquier otro tipo de representación, los retratos introdujeron en la imaginería católica recurrentes e irresolubles tensiones entre la teoría de la imagen religiosa y su funcionamiento práctico.

This essay has two goals. First, I will analyze the proceedings of an inquisitorial trial, which examined a portrait that was treated as if it were a devotional image, and will suggest a number of hypothesis about how to understand the prosecutor’s and witnesses’ ekphrastic descriptions. Secondly, I will attempt to examine, in more general terms, the complex relationship between portraiture and sacred imagery during the early modern period, suggesting that a portrait could easily come to function as an image for devotion. After all, portraits, understood as accurate, or at least verisimilar, depictions of real individuals, were deployed by the ecclesiastical establishment to strengthen the devotional practices of the faithful. At the same time, perhaps more than any other image type, portraits introduced into Catholic image making recurring and irresolvable tensions between the theory of the religious image and how it functioned in practice.
