Abstract
In the last decades, the study of paintings in the field of Art History has been enriched by methodological approaches from technology to materials. Utilizing references from other regions, Mexico has sought to consolidate an interdisciplinary platform with this objective; however it still presents challenges to be overcome: the systematization of studies carried out by period and region, a need for more publications, and calling attention to some examples of fundamental importance. One example of technologies used in paintings of XVII century Madrid is a process of preparing the canvas; in New Spain, this process would become the gold standard from the last quarter of the century until almost one hundred years later. Its main diffusion seems to have followed alternate routes to written or printed word.
