A vida de São Francisco de Assis nos azulejos setecentistas da América Portuguesa: entre hagiografias, gravuras e apropriações

Abstract

Este estudio tiene como objetivo presentar un conjunto compuesto por seis ciclos de azulejos en los que se representaron diferentes episodios de la vida de san Francisco de Asís (ca. 1181-1226) en las iglesias y conventos de la América Portuguesa. Los paneles cerámicos que componen estos ciclos narrativos se produjeron en Portugal, posiblemente durante la primera mitad del siglo XVIII. A pesar de esas referencias cronológicas, la construcción de las iconografías presentes en esos azulejos enmarca un recorte temporal mucho más amplio, abarcando desde la aparición de las primeras imágenes medievales de san Francisco hasta la elaboración de los grabados que circularon en Europa a lo largo de los siglos XVI a XVIII. Se pretende con este trabajo presentar brevemente estos ciclos de azulejos y analizar algunas de sus imágenes a partir de sus complejas iconografías.

This paper has the objective of presenting a set composed of six tile cycles in which different episodes of the life of St. Francis of Assisi (ca. 1181-1226) were represented in churches and convents of Portuguese America. The ceramic panels that compose these narrative cycles were produced in Portugal, possibly in the mid-eighteenth century. Notwithstanding these chronological beacons, the construction of the iconographies present in these tiles covers a much wider time frame, ranging from the appearance of the first medieval images of St. Francis to the elaboration of the engravings that circulated in Europe throughout the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Therefore, this study aims to briefly present these tile cycles and to analyze part of these representations in the light of their complex iconographic themes.
