Abstract
The most common classifications of urban cycling distinguish between three basic categories, each related to a concrete purpose: transport, leisure, and sport cycling. Upon closer examination, however, these categories are not homogeneous. Significant interconnections can be found among them, implying that cycling identities are complex and dynamic. These latter configurations could thus have relevant repercussions on research on cycling mobility. Using qualitative methodologies, we analysed cyclists’ discourses and practices relating to urban cycling.The objective was to examine the significant connections between different cycling motives. The data came from a research project on a selection of cities in Southern Spain, which have remarkably favoured cycling as a means of transport.

Entre las clasificaciones más comunes del ciclismo urbano se distinguen tres categorías básicas, viéndose cada una relacionada con un fin concreto: transporte, ocio y ciclismo deportivo. Al examinarlas más detenidamente, sin embargo, puede comprobarse que estas categorías no son homogéneas, pudiendo encontrarse importantes interconexiones entre ellas que implican que las identidades ciclistas son complejas y dinámicas. Así pues, estas últimas configuraciones podrían tener repercusiones relevantes en la investigación sobre la movilidad ciclista. Utilizando metodologías cualitativas, analizamos los discursos y las prácticas de los ciclistas en relación con el uso de la bicicleta urbana, con el objetivo de examinar las conexiones significativas entre los diferentes motivos para desplazarse en bicicleta. Este trabajo se apoya en datos de un proyecto de investigación que estudió una selección de ciudades del sur de España, en las que se ha favorecido notablemente el uso de la bicicleta como medio de transporte.
