Sexualidad ancestral: representaciones en la Costa Rica precolombina

Abstract

Se presenta en este documento una serie de elementos figurativos antropomorfos o de partes del cuerpo creadas por los pueblos precolombinos que habitaron en diferentes partes de Costa Rica entre el año 100 d. C. y el 1550 d.C., los cuales muestran aspectos de la sexualidad y la expresión del placer físico sexual. El estudio de estas representaciones sexuales nos acerca a una parte muy íntima de nuestros ancestros. Se analizó una muestra de 45 objetos arqueológicos de las colecciones del Museo Nacional de Costa Rica, el Museo del Jade y la Cultura Precolombina y el Museo del Oro, así como ejemplares procedentes de sitios arqueológicos. Estos artefactos hechos en arcilla, piedra y metal se clasificaron en tres tipos de representaciones con contenido sexual: las fálicas, las que aluden a masturbaciones y las parejas copulantes. Se hizo un abordaje que combinó dos enfoques, el arqueológico y el artístico (desde la teoría de la imagen). Las interpretaciones sobre estas representaciones no son concluyentes en este trabajo, y más bien para este primer nivel comparativo se pretende ser un punto de partida para futuras investigaciones con abordajes multidisciplinarios.

This document presents a series of anthropomorphic figurative elements or body parts created by the pre-Columbian peoples who inhabited different parts of Costa Rica between the year 100 A. D. and 1550 A. D., which show aspects of sexuality and the expression of sexual physical pleasure. The study of these sexual representations brings us closer to a very intimate part of our ancestors. A sample of 45 archaeological objects from the collections of the National Museum of Costa Rica, the Museum of Jade and Pre-Columbian Culture, the Gold Museum, as well as specimens from archaeo- logical sites were analyzed. These artifacts made of clay, stone and metal were classified into three types of representations with sexual content: phallic, those that allude to masturbation and copulating couples. An approach was made that combined two approaches, the archaeological and the artistic (from the theory of the image). The interpretations of these representations are not conclusive in this work, and rather for this first comparative level it is intended to be a starting point for future research with multidisciplinary approaches.
