La arquitectura de la catedral de Vic como epígono del artesanato barroco en Cataluña: notas sobre su inspiración leridana

Abstract

La catedral de Vic es la sede de la diócesis homónima, que ocupa un vasto territorio en el interior de Cataluña. A finales del siglo XVIII el obispo Hartalejo propone una importante reforma de la vieja catedral románica, que a su muerte se traducirá en una construcción totalmente nueva, siendo nuestra hipótesis que esta se inspira en la reciente catedral nueva de Lérida. Pero a pesar de sus semejanzas notables por lo que respecta sobre todo a la articulación del espacio interior, la catedral de Vic tendrá que hacer frente a numerosos retos que van desde la conservación de algunos elementos de la catedral anterior hasta el traslado del claustro, pasando por la demolición de la iglesia románica de Santa María de la Redonda. Todo ello en el marco de un proyecto llevado a cabo por profesionales de la construcción sin título académico y representantes de la tradición gremial propia del artesanato, constituyendo un caso epigonal de praxis y mentalidad barroca en una diócesis rural.

Vic Cathedral is the seat of the diocese of the same name, which occupies a vast territory in the interior of Catalonia. At the end of the 18th century, Bishop Hartalejo proposed a major renovation of the old Romanesque cathedral, which after his death resulted in a completely new construction, which we hypothesise was inspired by the recent new cathedral in Lérida. But in spite of their remarkable similarities, especially as regards the articulation of the interior space, Vic cathedral will have to face numerous challenges, ranging from the conservation of some elements of the previous cathedral to the relocation of the cloister and the demolition of the Romanesque church of Santa Maria de la Redonda. All this within the framework of a project carried out by construction professionals with no academic qualifications and representatives of the guild tradition of the craft trades, constituting an epigonal case of Baroque praxis and mentality in a rural diocese.
