Abstract
Throughout the historiography produced about the samba, women used to show up in secondary roles. This tendency has been changing for a few years now, much due to new research on women’s role in samba. In this work we discuss women protagonism in the origins of samba, as well as in its development throughout the 20th century and women contemporary roles in the samba as a musical gender and culture. There is an erasure concerning the memory of the female protagonism when it comes to the processes that formed samba. Yet, after years of struggle of these female sambistas for recognition as righteous part of this culture and musical gender (as singers, composers and musicians), there is a clear feeling that now they have a voice that cannot be silenced again.
