Los mecanismos de la inventiva del arte colonial: una aproximación al corpus quiteño

Abstract

Es bien sabido que los grabados fueron importantes fuentes de inspiración para el arte colonial. Pero el arte de las colonias también se apartó de sus fuentes grabadas. Esto lo logró apelando a ciertos mecanismos de la inventiva que aquí llamaremos IMPRESIÓN, REPRODUCCIÓN, TRADUCCIÓN, INSTALACIÓN, COMBINACIÓN, ADAPTACIÓN, REINTERPRETACIÓN e INVENCIÓN. El propósito de este ensayo es definir estos mecanismos e ilustrarlos con material tomado del corpus quiteño. Este trabajo es parte de un proyecto de amplio alcance que busca definir e ilustrar los mecanismos de la inventiva del arte colonial en general. La aproximación al corpus quiteño que emprenderemos aquí se sumará a las aproximaciones que hemos hecho ya a los materiales coloniales peruanos, altoperuanos, y novohispanos. Todos estos materiales provienen del Proyecto para el Estudio de las Fuentes Grabadas del Arte Colonial (PESSCA).

It is well known that prints were important sources of inspiration for Spanish Colonial Art. But the art of the colonies also departed from its engraved sources. This departure arose as a result of certain mechanisms of ingenuity which we will call here IMPRESSION, REPRODUCTION, TRANSLATION, INSTALATION, COMBINATION, ADAPTATION, REINTERPRETATION and INVENTION. The purpose of this paper is to define these mechanisms and illustrate them with material drawn from the Quitean corpus. This project is part of a larger enterprise which seeks to define and illustrate the mechanisms of ingenuity of Spanish Colonial Art in general. The approximation to the Quitean corpus carried out here will add to the approximations we have already completed towards Peruvian, Alto-Peruvian, Novo-Hispanic materials. All of these materials come from the Project for the Study of Engraved Sources of Spanish Colonial Art (PESSCA).
