La terminación del gran proyecto de la urna de San Fernando: el frontal de altar de José de Villaviciosa, platero de la Capilla Real de la catedral de Sevilla

Abstract

El presente trabajo estudia una interesante pieza de plata perteneciente a la Capilla Real de la catedral de Sevilla. En concreto, nos referimos al frontal de altar de San Fernando, el último eslabón del gran proyecto de la urna relicario que se ideó en el Barroco para las reliquias del Santo Rey y que fue ejecutado por José de Villaviciosa, orfebre que entre 1732 y 1758 ocupó la plaza de platero de la Real Capilla. Además de hacer un recorrido por la historia del frontal, labrado gracias a la munificencia del capellán Juan Vaz, también se realiza un análisis estético e iconográfico, en el cual hemos evidenciado que el artista tomó como fuente, para sus múltiples relieves figurativos, diferentes jeroglíficos de la obra de Fernando de la Torre Farfán dedicada a las fiestas que se organizaron en la catedral de Sevilla durante la canonización del Santo Rey en 1671.

The present work studies an interesting piece of silver belonging to the Royal Chapel in Seville Cathedral. In particular, we are talking the altar front of San Fernando, the last link in the great project of the reliquary urn that was devised in the Baroque for the relics of the Holy King and that was executed by José de Villaviciosa, artist who between 1732 and 1758 occupied the position of Silversmith of Royal Chapel. In addition to taking a tour through the history of the frontal, carved thanks to the munificence of the chaplain Juan Vaz, an aesthetic and iconographic analysis is also carried out, in which we have evidenced how the artist took as a source for his multiple figurative reliefs different inserted engraved compositions in the work of Fernando de la Torre Farfán dedicated to the festivities that were organized in the Seville Cathedral during his canonization in 1671.
