Abstract
At the end of XVIII century, with the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, a new image appeared to personify the nations: the allegory of the Republic. Wrapped in the values of a new social system, it would give rise to the Modern World and its role will be outstanding in the new image of the countries. The creation of the republican allegory, heir to a rich visual culture of the Baroque would occur in France but immediately it would travel to the American continent to personify the new nation of the United States. In short, the successive colonial Latin American independences would adopt the allegory of the republic, which would play an important role in the formation of the incipient nations of the New World.
