Abstract

L’architecture romaine provinciale s’est montrée inventive dans tous les domaines romain stoa semi-circulaire en Afrique, fanums octogonaux cruciformes en Gaule, temples avec captage d’eau sacrée par leurs fondations transformées en sources, fusion entre temples et thermes, simulations de stations thermales hors d’un contexte hydraulique naturel. Enfin, d’un point de vue technique, l’invention, à Argos, de la charpente en béton comme moyen d’alléger une voûte, procédé jamais vu auparavant, tardivement reproduit par la suite. Les clés de ces innovations sont la transposition d’une forme dans un contexte inédit, l’inventivité pure pour répondre à un programme inédit, l’exploitation d’une logique poussée à ses extrêmes, voire le coup de génie d’un jour.

Roman architecture was inventive in the provinces and in all areas: fountains with semi-circular stoa in Africa; octagonal cruciform fanums in Gaul; temples with holy water catchment for their foundations transformed into sources; fusion between temples and thermal baths; and simulations of thermal baths out of a natural hydraulic context. Finally, from a technical point of view, the invention in Argos of the concrete frame as a means of lightening a vault, a process tardily seen before and never reproduced thereafter. The keys to these innovations are the transposition of a form in a new context, pure inventiveness to respond to a new programme, the exploitation of a logic pushed to its extremes, even a stroke of genius.
