Abstract
artes y tradiciones populares.
Huicholes or wixaritari, an ethnic group native to the north-centre of Mexico, have developed new artistic ways to express themselves merging traditional and contemporary styles. As an example, we can observe the nearika or painting yarns, which commonly is the reflection of sacred visions. Also, they have found other mechanism to preserve and share their traditions; for example, some of their myths have been oversimplified to be able to explain their art to the ¿mestizos¿. This article discusses some areas of their cosmogony, focusing on a nearika by José Benítez Sánchez, which was created in 2000 and it was donated to the Museo Zacatecano in 2002. José has been considered as the greatest huichol artist and, in 2003, he was awarded with the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes for art and popular traditions.
