Abstract
In the History of transpacific and transatlantic encounters, the Keicho Embassy is one of the most commented and studied episodes. In the last decade, there has been a resurgence of interest in its scope, protagonists, and consequences. This essay is based on documents and books from the 17th century and on the most relevant recent contributions in order to sug- gest some possibilities for understanding the phenomenon of the Embassy, following, in particular, one of its central figures, the Franciscan Luis Sotelo. My proposal calls for understanding Sotelo from the stories and the relics of the past: from the textualities, especially the court and state archives in his capacity as a diplomat, and the hagiographic ones, as a venerable evangelizing martyr. From the materialities, studying the objects exchanged during the Embassy.
