AB Dentro de la historia de los encuentros transpacíficos y transatlánticos, la Embajada Keicho es uno de los episodios más comentados y estudiados. En la última década ha resurgido el interés por sus alcances, protagonistas y consecuencias. El presente ensayo se apoya en documentos e impresos del siglo XVII y las más relevantes aportaciones recientes para sugerir algunas posibilidades de comprensión del fenómeno de la Embajada, en particular siguiendo a una de sus figuras centrales, el franciscano Luis Sotelo.La propuesta llama a entender a Sotelo a partir de relatos y reliquias: desde las textualidades, sobre todo los archivos cortesanos y estatales en su calidad de diplomático, y los hagiográficos, como venerable mártir evangelizador. Y desde las materialidades, estudiando los objetos intercambiados durante la Embajada.
AB In the History of transpacific and transatlantic encounters, the Keicho Embassy is one of the most commented and studied episodes. In the last decade, there has been a resurgence of interest in its scope, protagonists, and consequences. This essay is based on documents and books from the 17th century and on the most relevant recent contributions in order to sug- gest some possibilities for understanding the phenomenon of the Embassy, following, in particular, one of its central figures, the Franciscan Luis Sotelo.My proposal calls for understanding Sotelo from the stories and the relics of the past: from the textualities, especially the court and state archives in his capacity as a diplomat, and the hagiographic ones, as a venerable evangelizing martyr. From the materialities, studying the objects exchanged during the Embassy.
