Nuevas aportaciones sobre la capilla de Loreto del Noviciado de los jesuitas en Lima

Abstract

La llegada de los jesuitas al virreinato del Perú se produce en 1568, estableciéndose en un primer momento en Lima (en donde fundan el Colegio Máximo de San Pablo y el Noviciado de San Antón Abad), y continuando posteriormente su expansión por Cuzco, Potosí, Juli o Arequipa. Tras la expulsión de los religiosos promulgada por la Pragmática Sanción de Carlos III (1767), el Noviciado pasaría a tener diversas funciones, siendo en la actualidad la sede central de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. En este conjunto sobresale el actual salón de grados (la antigua capilla de Loreto), cuya cubierta presenta un interesante programa iconográfico dedicado a la Virgen María y a otros santos teólogos, y en donde se aprecia la influencia de textos y grabados centroeuropeos. Con esta comunicación pretendemos arrojar más luz sobre la iconografía de este lugar, indagando del mismo modo en las fuentes de inspiración de las pinturas y posibles autores de la misma.

The arrival of the Jesuits to the viceroyalty of Peru took place in 1568, establishing themselves at first in Lima (where they founded the Colegio Máximo de San Pablo and the Novitiate of San Antón Abad), and later continuing their expansion to Cuzco, Potosí, Juli or Arequipa. After the expulsion of the Jesuits by the Pragmatic Sanction of the King Charles III of Spain (1767), the Novitiate would have different functions, being at the present time the headquarters of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. In this ensemble the current Salón de Grados (the former chapel of Loreto) excels, whose cover features an interesting iconographic program dedicated to the Virgin Mary and other theologian saints, and where the influence of Central-European texts and engravings can be appreciated. This paper will try to shed more light on the iconography of this place, investigating the sources of inspiration for the paintings and their possible authors.
