Juan Gómez de Trasmonte en las catedrales de México y Puebla

Abstract

En el proceso constructivo de las catedrales de México y Puebla, la participación de Juan Gómez de Trasmonte fue muy importante, pues transformó su sentido espacial y lumínico. La cúpula en los cruceros aportó su parte en esa modificación, al mismo tiempo que las dotó de un sello particular con la incorporación del octógono. Aunque quizá, lo más relevante haya sido que esas soluciones se convirtieron en características distintivas de la arquitectura novohispana durante los siglos XVII y XVIII al haber sido utilizadas en otras catedrales, ellas mismas centros regionales de irradiación de formas artísticas, así como en muchos otros edificios que motivaron su réplica, de manera que podemos decir que la arquitectura barroca del virreinato se distingue por tener generalmente espacios luminosos y cúpulas octagonales, con toda la carga simbólica y de modernidad artística que tuvieron en su tiempo.

In the construction process of the cathedrals of Mexico and Puebla, the participation of Juan Gómez de Trasmonte was very important, because it transformed its spatial and light sense. The dome on the cruisers contributed its part in that modification, at the same time that it endowed them with a particular seal with the incorporation of the octagon. Perhaps, the most important thing has been that these solutions became distinctive features of NovoHispan architecture during the 17th and 18th centuries, having been used in other cathedrals, they themselves regional centers of irradiation of artistic forms, as well as in many other buildings that motivated their reproduction, so that we can say that the Baroque architecture of the viceroyalty is distinguished by having usually bright spaces and octagonal domes, with all the symbolic burden and artistic modernity that they had in their time.
