Patrimonio Perdido: Tesoros Guatemaltecos en Colecciones Extranjeras

Abstract

¿Por qué se encuentra gran parte del patrimonio más emblemático de Latinoamérica fuera de la región? Como tantos otros valiosos documentos, los Libros Segundo y Tercero del Cabildo de Santiago se daban por perdidos, imposibilitando la consulta de fuentes clave sobre los acontecimientos y circunstancias del periodo colonial temprano en Guatemala. Resulta, sin embargo, que estos dos tomos, que cubren los años entre 1530 y 1553, no están desaparecidos sino que forman parte de los fondos de la Hispanic Society of America desde principios del siglo pasado. Se discute cómo esos dos tomos, y otro material documental y arqueológico de incalculable valor, fueron sacados de Guatemala, identificando el siglo XIX y los primeros años del siglo XX como el periodo en que el patrimonio latinoamericano fue más vulnerable a las amenazas (internas y externas) de expolio. Why is so much of Latin America¿s emblematic patrimony not to be found in the region itself? Like many priceless documents, the Libros Segundo y Tercero del Cabildo de Santiago have long been thought to be missing, thereby removing for consultation key sources concerning the events and circumstances of the early colonial period in Guatemala. It turns out that these two tomes, which span the years between 1530 and 1553, are not missing. In fact, they have been part of the holdings of the Hispanic Society of America for the past century. Discussion centers on how these two items, and countless other textual materials and archeological artefacts, were taken from Guatemala or disappeared from circulation altogether, identifying the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the period during which national patrimony was most under threat from both internal and external forces.
