Oficinas itinerantes, entalhadores nômades: Guardiano das Chagas, um entalhador carioca na Capitania de São Paulo

Abstract

Este estudo aborda a forma de instalação e organização das oficinas de ta- lha itinerantes, maneira de organização profissional relativamente comum no Brasil Colonial. Para tanto, utiliza-se como estudo de caso a trajetória de Guardiano José das Chagas (Rio de Janeiro, ca.1744 ¿ Guaratinguetá[?], após 1809), entalhador nascido no Rio de Janeiro e que se estabeleceu com oficina, sucessivamente, em Parati e em Guaratinguetá, com obras nessas duas cidades e em povoações próximas. O registro de suas mudanças de município é um caso bastante interessante para se compreender como se davam as relações entre contratantes e os artífices contratados no Brasil de fins do século XVIII e inícios do XIX e as dinâmicas de confecção e entrega de obras de grande peso e volume, como os retábulos das igrejas das cidades mencionadas.This paper addresses the form of installation and organization of itinerant woodcarving workshops, a relatively common way of professional organization in Colonial Brazil. Therefore, the trajectory of Guardiano José das Chagas (Rio de Janeiro, ca.1744 - Guaratinguetá [?], After 1809) is taken as a case study, a carver born in Rio de Janeiro who established himself and his workshop, successively, in Parati and Guaratinguetá, working in these two cities and nearby places. The existing record of his changes from one location to another make it a very interesting case to understand how the relations between contractors and employed craftsmen worked in Brazil at the end of the 18th century and early 19th century, and the dynamics involved in executing and delivering considerably large and heavy artworks, as are the altarpieces found in the churches of the mentioned cities.
