"Tiene la hermosura y adorno necesarios": Los retablos mayores de la catedral de Mérida en Yucatán durante el virreinato

Abstract

La catedral de Mérida en Yucatán ha contado con dos retablos mayores a lo largo de su historia. Piezas de imaginería que se emplearon a manera de "modelo oficial" para numerosos retablos al interior de la provincia, pero que en la actualidad ya no se conservan; por esta razón, el análisis de los pocos testimonios que se resguardan de ellos son pieza clave para entender cómo se conformó un arte regional que tuvo como eje central el recinto catedralicio, el cual permitió la creación una imaginería que fue adaptada por los artífices locales, tanto en el aspecto formal y estilístico, como en los materiales empleados para su manufactura, mismos que dieron como resultado una interpretación peculiar y una tendencia completamente local en la que perviven elementos novohispanos y europeos.

The Mérida's Cathedral from Yucatán had two major altarpieces through the history. This imagery pieces were used as "official model" for numerous altarpieces for all Province, but currently are not preserved. For this reason, the analysis of the few testimonies that exists from them are an important key to understand how regional art was formed by the model of cathedral resulting the creation of an imagery adapted to a formal and stylistic forms by local artisans. They used raw materials finded in the land for their manufacture obtaining a peculiar interpretation that showed the New Spain and Europe influences.
