Abstract

Imaginary, high relief and arms stones present in the territory of Foz do the Douro reveal the Benedictine memory of space. In the centuries in which they remained, the monks resorted to iconographic elements of their Order, such as the stone of the Order, the altar dedicated to Saint Gertrude, and the rare panel alluding to the birth of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica of the altarpiece of Our Lady of Grace. In the research, we proceed to the study and analysis of Benedictine iconography present in the parish church of Foz do the Douro, trying to establish the relation between the iconographic elements existing in the temple with the memory of the Institution that affects it and demonstrate the importance of the study of the image in its context.
