Teatralidad del Barroco sive Cosmografía Artística. Valdés Leal: epatar o morir

Abstract

A menudo se alude al carácter teatral de la pintura de Valdés Leal como elemento definitorio de su estilo. Especialmente dramático en sus composiciones, impactante hasta el sobrecogimiento, aspectos compartidos con la mentalidad de la cultura del Barroco en general y con la sensibilidad teatral en particular, cuya finalidad común radicaba en la conexión empática con el espectador mediante los recursos sorprendentes de una retórica propia de la “cosmología escénica” y con unos modelos de referencia e influencia italianos, que se gestaron en las celebraciones cortesanas de la lúdica áulica. Precisamente, lo que se propone en este estudio historiográfico es una aproximación y recorrido, por modos y maneras concomitantes, entre uno de los artistas más representativos de dicha semántica y el léxico aportado por las artes escénicas.

The theatrical character of Valdés Leal’s painting is often referred to as a defining element of his style. His compositions are particularly dramatic and shocking to the point of overwhelming, aspects shared with the mentality of Baroque culture in general and with the theatrical sensibility in particular, whose common aim was to create an empathetic connection with the spectator through the surprising resources of a rhetoric typical of “stage cosmology” and with italian models of reference and influence, which were developed in the courtly celebrations of entertainment. Precisely what is proposed in this historiographical study is an approach and a journey, through concomitant modes and manners, between one of the most representative artists of this semantics and the lexicon contributed by the performing arts.
