El arte barroco andaluz en las guías de viajes publicadas por Murray, Baedeker y Joanne

Abstract

El presente estudio se centra en la construcción del imaginario barroco andaluz en las guías de viaje Murray, Baedeker y Joanne publicadas entre 1882 y 1909 en Inglaterra, Alemania y Francia. Para ello, se analizarán los planteamientos que expusieron en dichas guías historiadores e hispanistas relevantes como Carl Justi, Richard Ford o Paul M. Lefort, además de presentar los itinerarios propuestos para visitar la comunidad andaluza. La clasificación con estrellas de las guías Baedeker servirá como introducción para conocer qué era lo más valorado, las ciudades más representadas o dignificadas y qué posición tenía lo barroco en comparación con otras obras artísticas. A continuación, se expondrá la imagen que estaba gestándose respecto a la arquitectura, la pintura y la escultura andaluza y el protagonismo dado a Murillo, Velázquez, Montañés y Cano.

The present study focuses on the construction of the Andalusian Baroque imaginary in Murray, Baedeker, and Joanne travel guides published between 1882 and 1909 in England, Germany, and France. In order to do so, the approaches that relevant historians and Hispanists such as Carl Justi, Richard Ford, or Paul M. Lefort put forward in these guides will be analyzed, in addition to presenting the proposed itineraries to visit Andalusia. The star rating of the Baedeker guides will serve as an introduction to know the most admired, the most represented or dignified cities and what position the Baroque style had compared with other artistic works. Then, the image that was developing regarding Andalusian architecture, painting, and sculpture, and the prominence of Murillo, Velázquez, Montañés, and Cano will be exposed.
