La obra de Francisco Becerra en la catedral de Lima

Abstract

La Basílica Catedral Metropolitana de Lima y Primada del Perú es uno de los edificios más importantes del Virreinato peruano. El templo actual fue trazado por el arquitecto extremeño Francisco Becerra a finales del siglo XVI, pero un grave terremoto devastó la ciudad el 19 de octubre de 1609, provocando graves daños en el edificio y modificando en gran medida el aspecto inicial del mismo. El objetivo principal de estas líneas será analizar la traza original del templo, a través de una serie de documentos de la época que describen la forma más adecuada de restaurar y continuar los trabajos realizados por el arquitecto, utilizando elementos góticos, renacentistas y barrocos, que marcaron un antes y un después en la arquitectura limeña y en el virreinato peruano.

The Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Lima and Primada of Peru is one of the most important buildings of the Peruvian Viceroyalty. The current temple was drawn by the extremaduran architect Francisco Becerra at the end ofthe sixteenth century, but a serious earthquake on october 19, 1609 will cause serious damage to the building, greatly modifying the initial appearance of the building. The main objective of these lines will be to analyze the original trace of the temple through a series of documents describing the most appropriate way to restore and continue the work begun by the architect, using Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, which will mark a before and after in the Architecture of Peru and in the Peruvian viceroyalty.
