El retablo tardobarroco de mampostería de cal y arena en el sur de Portugal

Abstract

La naturaleza periférica de Portugal, frente a los grandes centros europeos de producción artística, ha dado lugar a interesantes fenómenos regionales de adaptación de influencias estilísticas a las diferentes realidades locales, en particular con respecto al Alentejo. Esto es particularmente visible en el caso de los retablos de mampostería de cal y arena, con acabados en estuco policromado, categoría heterogénea desde el punto de vista formal y estilístico, que tuvo gran éxito en el arte portugués en el siglo XVIII. A pesar detodas las vicisitudes sufridas, muchas de estas piezas sobrevivieron hasta nuestros días, dando pruebas de la gran calidad y maestría de los artistas presentes en la región del Alentejo durante los siglos XVI-XVIII.Compared to the major European centres of artistic production, Portugal¿s peripheral nature has given rise to interesting regional phenomena of stylistic adaptations to different local realities, particularly the Alentejo. This is particularly visible in the case of lime and sand masonry altarpieces, with polychrome stucco finishes, a heterogeneous category from the formal and stylistic point of view, which was very successful in the eighteenth Portuguese art. Despite all the damages suffered, many of these pieces survived today, bearing evidence of the excellent quality and expertise of the artists present in the Alentejo region during the sixteenth to eighteenthcenturies.
