Cosmovisión e identidades indígenas en el suroeste de la Amazonía en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII.

Abstract

La cosmovisión y la identidad de las sociedades amerindias durante el período colonial son temas de difícil inferencia desde la Etnohistoria. Ante este desafío, este artículo presenta un estudio acerca de la región del complejo hidrográfico del Madeira, en el suroeste de la Amazonía, durante la primera mitad del siglo XVIII. A partir de la revisión crítica de las principales fuentes primarias de la región, se pretende abarcar esta problemática mediante el análisis de las estrategias y los mecanismos de respuesta desarrollados por los amerindios. Con esto, este artículo pretende demostrar cómo el estudio de las relaciones interétnicas puede ayudar a revelar nuevos datos acerca de las dinámicas socioculturales de los distintos grupos indígenas, y a comprender cómo éstos construían y reformulaban sus identidades tanto étnicas como sociales.

Subjects such as the worldview and the identity of Amerindian societies throughout the colonial period are a difficult matter to infer from ethnohistorical data. Before this challenge, this article presents a study on the region of the Madeira River, in the southwest of Amazonia, during the first half of the eighteenth century. Based on the critical review of some of the most important primary sources available for the region, it aims at tackling this issue by means of the analysis of the strategies and response mechanisms developed by Amerindians. With this, this article hopes to demonstrate how the study of interethnic relations may contribute to unveil new data regarding the sociocultural dynamics of the indigenous groups, and to better understand how they constructed and refashioned both their ethnic and social identities
