Abstract
Since 1809 the city of Quito was the environment of numerous emancipatory movements where both civilian society and religious institutions participated. Some Franciscan friars were involved in these struggles, uprising, and even taking up arms. In this period, some friars became prolific musicians inside and outside the Convento Máximo de San Francisco de Quito. This essay shows some of the music composed and performed during these tumultuous events, and contributes new data about the musical trajectory of some of the musician friars who participated in Ecuador’s independence movement.
