La restauración de las pinturas murales de la iglesia de San Antonio Abad (Palma, Mallorca). Estudio histórico-artístico

Abstract

El convento y hospital de San Antonio Abad de Palma es, sin lugar a duda, el conjunto conventual más original del barroco tardío de Mallorca, debido, fundamentalmente, a la articulación de sus dos espacios principales (la iglesia y el claustro) a partir de sendas plantas ovaladas dispuestas perpendicularmente. El interior de la iglesia, finalizada en 1768, se halla completamente revestido de pinturas murales que pueden clasificarse en tres grupos: un ciclo hagiográfico, decoración floral y jaspeados. El conjunto pictórico fue enteramente restaurado a lo largo de varias fases entre los años 2012 y 2014 por el Taller de Restauración del Obispado de Mallorca. El presente trabajo recoge la problemática, los métodos de trabajo aplicados y las principales aportaciones de los estudios histórico-artísticos, tanto preliminares como derivados de la intervención material, que permitieron poner en valor el conjunto pictórico y ayudar a establecer criterios de intervención.

The convent and the hospital of Sant Antoni Abad in Palma are, without a shadow of a doubt, the most original convent group of the late baroque in Majorca. This is due to the articulation of its two main spaces (the church and the cloister) and the perpendicular disposition of its two oval floors. The inner church, finished in 1768, is completely coated (or covered) with wall paintings with mural paintings that can be classified into three different groups: a hagiographic cycle, floral decoration and marbled surfaces. All these pictures were entirely restored by Taller de Restauració del Bisbat de Mallorca (Majorcan Bishopric restoration workshop) in different phases between 2012 and 2014. The current study gathers the problematic aspects, the methodology of the leading restoration techniques that have been applied, and the main contribution of the historical and artistical preliminary studies and the studies on the pictoric group to establish the intervention criteria for its restoration.
