Portugueses en el Reino de Sevilla: Jerez de la Frontera, 1470-1550.

Abstract

La presencia extranjera en Jerez de la Frontera fue muy relevante en los momentos finales de la Edad Media y comienzos de la Modernidad. Entre dichos colectivos de extranjeros sobresalieron por su importancia cuantitativa los portugueses, la mayoría de ellos en calidad de estantes o transeúntes, aunque no podemos menospreciar la relevancia de quienes se asentaron de forma definitiva en la ciudad. Procedían de toda la geografía portuguesa y se dedicaron preferentemente a las actividades terciarias, aunque asimismo las artesanales formaron parte relevante de ellas, siendo minoritarios los empleados en las actividades primarias.

The presence of foreigners in the Kingdom of Seville at the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of Modernity has not been studied enough in some places as Jerez de la Frontera. The importance of the Portuguese colony in Jerez must be highlighted, some of them as transient, other as neighbours en the town. They came from all the Portuguese geography and worked in the tertiary sector, but also in the handycraft and a small number in agriculture and farming.
