Abstract

Description
The present work aims to carry out an interpretive analysis around the phenomenon of sanctity in the literature of Modern Spain and its evolution from the Middle Ages to Modernity. To do this, we have studied the precedents of the hagiographic tradition, from the times of primitive Christianity, to the medieval manuscript antecedents of the Legenda Aurea, and how the genre of the lives of saints is multiplied thanks to the work of the printing press. For our study, we turn to the sources of the time (the Flos Sanctorum and some individual lives) to study the specific case of the figure of Saint Anthony the Abbot, from the 4th to the 18th century. We have made an analysis of the sources in light of recent research, thus coming to understand the phenomenon within the religious and social context of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, and also understanding how the lives of saints were adapting to the tastes of the public and to the demands of the earthly power of the Catholic Church.
