Valdés Leal: breves notas sobre arte y ciencia

Abstract

El arte de Juan de Valdés Leal estuvo muy influenciado por temas y motivos ligados al cultivo de las ciencias en el siglo XVII y sus dimensiones visuales, materiales y simbólicas. Estos temas y motivos no sólo contribuyen a la expresividad e intensidad que caracterizan la obra de Valdés Leal, sino que también enriquecen su discurso pictórico en la medida en que invitan al espectador a un compromiso más profundo y refinado con su arte. Este capítulo ofrece una visión general de tales características: desde la representación de libros, instrumentos y detalles relacionados con la ciencia, hasta el interés, compartido y desarrollado por su hijo, Lucas Valdés, por el uso de la perspectiva como medio para realzar el carácter escenográfico y las dimensiones ilusionistas de sus composiciones.

The art of Juan de Valdés Leal was greatly informed by themes and motifs linked to the cultivation of the sciences in the seventeenth century and their visual, material and symbolic dimensions. These themes and motifs not only contribute to the expressiveness and intensity that characterise Valdés Leal’s work, but also enrich his pictorial discourse in so far as they invite the viewer to embark on a more profound and refined engagement with his art. This chapter offers an overview of such features: from the depiction of science-related books, instruments and details in his paintings, to Valdés Leal’s interest, shared and developed by his son, Lucas Valdés, in the use of perspective as a means to enhance the scenographic and illusionistic dimensions of his compositions.
