Abstract
Area of La Paz in the southern portion of the peninsula of Baja California has been considered one of the most important areas for the ancient inhabitants. The coastal zone satisfies the favorable factors for settlements, such as the availability for food resources of both marine and terrestrial origins, the abundance of the raw material to make tools from stone, wood, shell and bone, the security of the settlements, protected by La Paz Bay, and the abundance of rock shelters or caves. On the other hand, the Sierra de Las Cacachilas, located to the east of La Paz, seems to form some kind of cult of mountain, creating sacred and ceremonial places, represented by pictographic sites and sites with numerous fixed mortars and metates. The archaeological sites indicate the high densities of sites near the coast, composed principally by habitation campsites and lithic quarries and workshops; while in the mountain zones many pictographic sites and a few habitation campsites were recorded. The motives of the paintings reflect the life and cosmovision of the ancient inhabitants of the region.
