Abstract

This essay focuses on the long-term impact of the French Rocaille onto Portuguese court architecture and garden culture, via the influence of Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d’Argenville (1680-1765) treatieses: La Théorie et la pratique du jardinage (1709) and L’Histoire naturelle eclaircie (...), la Conchyliologie (...) (1757). Through the fashion and taste for shells and fossils in Lisbon cabinets of naturalia, the Rocaille taste and spirit effectively shaped a group of garden and decorative masterpieces along the coast of Lisbon, where the maritime and bucolic aesthetics merge into a refined archaic lifestyle and mode.
