Abstract
The analysis of a document from the Archivio di Stato in Rome allows us to delve into the history of the creation of a particular liturgical artifact such as the blessed bands that in the past the popes sent as a gift to the hereditary princes of the European Catholic monarchies. Tradition up to now has linked this papal gift to the birth of Charles II but the study of different documents allows us to hypothesize that it could have been intended for little Fernando Tomas, son of Marianna of Austria and Philip IV of Spain, an unfortunate infant who does not exceed first year of life. The description of the trousseau allows to stimulate knowledge of the world of silversmiths, painters, embroiderers, and trusted merchants of Alexander VII and to examine the political and diplomatic reasons behind these gifts.
