Mosaico iconográfico de San Benito de Palermo en la Nueva España

Abstract

Es posible reconstruir un acontecimiento histórico a partir de documentos que conforman las fuentes. No obstante, también el legado artístico ¿pintura, grabados y esculturas, así como otras manifestaciones culturales¿ nos pueden ayudar al estudio de una devoción. En este sentido, la intención de este análisis es estudiar el surgimiento de la devoción de san Benito de Palermo y sus distintas representaciones iconográficas en la Nueva España desde el siglo XVII hasta inicios del XIX. La investigación permitirá comprender las características de su culto en el mundo hispánico.

It is possible to reconstruct a historical event from documents that make up the sources. However, also the artistic legacy - painting, engravings and sculptures, as well as other cultural manifestations - can help us to study a devoción. In this sense, the intention of this analysis is to study the emergence of the devotion of Saint Benedict of Palermo and its different iconographic representations in New Spain from the 16th century to the beginning of the 19th century. The investigation will allow understand the characteristics of his cult in the Hispanic world.
